Backyard Burgers

Growing up in Dubai, my favorite food was always burgers. Whether I was hitting Shake Shack or Five Guys, nothing hit the spot quite like a juicy, all-beef patty with melted cheese on a toasted bun. Since I moved to Lahore in 2018, I realized that the city did not have a similar burger to the ones I had come to love. I began experimenting with different burger recipes at home in my spare time. When the pandemic hit, I decided to take my burger-making hobby and make it an obsession. I spent my savings on a grill and a cow’s worth of meat, then I got to work smashing burgers. In the summer of 2020, after countless hours of research, taste testing, and trial & error, I eventually succeeded in crafting the perfect smashburger.
I wanted to share this perfect burger with the rest of Lahore, and within weeks I was selling hundreds of burgers a day right out of my backyard. Once I realized that people really loved these burgers, I got to work figuring out the logistics. I had to meticulously plan everything: when my meat would be delivered and defrosted, when I could pick up the buns, and when customers should come to pick up the burgers. It was a slow process at first, as I had to run absolutely everything myself. As the venture became more successful, however, I began delegating parts of the process. I trained my house staff on how to make and cook these smash burgers while I managed operations, customer timings and expectations. From just 5 burgers in the 2 hours I could book everyone for in the evening before dinner we went to 150-200 burgers in 6 weeks. I started to realize SMASH was no longer a passion project, it was a thriving business!
